Google Brain Power

Today I needed to create a bunch (about 10) new email accounts for a client project (suffice it to say it’s a measure to reduce the number of post-its and pink memo slips cluttering up the fronts of various monitors). Naturally, being a gmail user/proponent/fan, I attempted to do this using gmail.

It turns out the brains at google squash one’s multiple email account creation efforts after the fifth account. On try #6 (and #7 from another browser, then #8 from another desktop with the same external IP address), I received this message instead of the usual “Welcome to Gmail” landing page:

I don’t know if I’m impressed or annoyed. A little of both, I suppose.

  1. Turns out it’s an IP-based filter. I was able to log on to the supposedly invalid accounts by connecting to the ‘net via my cell phone. I was then able to create the last few gmail accounts I needed.

The gmail app must experience an incredible amount of abuse for a limitation like this to be in place.
