Misspelled Domains

I was thinking about the adwords pages that turn up when you mistype the domain of the most popular websites (like myspace) and came across a utility that searches common misspellings for a given site, performs a lookup to find availability, and presents you with a list of results.

The schmucks who wrote it charge $50 for that crappy little piece of software. I have therefore begun writing the equivalent in perl (mmm, regular expressions…). Plus doing the whois lookups through AJAX will be a nice feather in my hat. Please comment if you have any insights into such a tool. I’ll probably give it away as donation-ware. I think the affiliate revenue from the domain registrar click-throughs could be a new source for beer money, too. Maybe even good beer.
